Since 1947, Historic Charleston Foundation has been a
leading voice for preservation, advocacy, and thoughtful growth in Charleston
and the Lowcountry.
Our mission is to advocate for a future Charleston
that honors and protects its people, places, culture, and community. Through
preservation, education, and community engagement, we work to ensure that
Charleston's historic character and cultural heritage remain vibrant and
relevant for generations to come.
Today, Historic Charleston Foundation addresses some
of the region's most pressing challenges, including resiliency, affordability,
sustainability, and responsible growth. Our work spans a wide range of
initiatives—from stewarding one of the nation's largest preservation easement
programs and advocating for historic neighborhoods and cultural landscapes, to
preserving and interpreting Charleston's rich history through the Aiken-Rhett
House Museum and Nathaniel Russell House Museum.
We are equally committed to ensuring that preservation
benefits the broader community. Through the Common Cause Loan Fund, Historic
Charleston Foundation provides low-interest financing to income-qualified
homeowners, helping longtime residents remain in the neighborhoods they have
helped shape. Through the Saving Grace Initiative, we partner with
congregations and community leaders to preserve historic Black churches and the
stories, traditions, and cultural heritage they represent.
Historic Charleston Foundation also serves as a
trusted advocate on issues that will shape Charleston's future. Whether
convening public conversations, conducting research, educating residents, or
engaging decision-makers, we work to promote thoughtful solutions that balance
growth with preservation. Our leadership in the planning and redevelopment of
Union Pier exemplifies this commitment. By bringing preservation expertise,
community voices, and a long-term perspective to the process, we helped advance
a vision for Charleston's waterfront that respects the city's history while
creating opportunities for future generations.
For nearly 79 years, Historic Charleston Foundation
has demonstrated that preservation is not simply about protecting historic
buildings—it is about strengthening communities, honoring cultural heritage,
and creating a more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable future.
Proceeds from the 2026 Fall Gala support Historic
Charleston Foundation's preservation, advocacy, educational, and community
initiatives, helping ensure that Charleston's people, places, culture, and
community continue to thrive for generations to come.
