For over 75 years, Historic Charleston Foundation has been at the forefront of preserving and shaping Charleston into the dynamic, preservation-focused city it is today.

Our mission is to advocate for a future Charleston that honors and protects its people, places, culture, and community.  We are committed to addressing pressing issues such as resiliency, sustainability, and affordability, while promoting smart, thoughtful growth.  From our robust easement and covenant programs, to advocacy for historic settlement communities, to the creation of the Common Cause Loan Fund, Historic Charleston Foundation remains a powerful voice and trusted leader in shaping a more inclusive, enduring future for Charleston and the surrounding region.

In 2023 and 2024, Historic Charleston Foundation played a pivotal role in shaping the future of Union Pier—a once-industrial waterfront poised for thoughtful reinvention. As stewards of Charleston’s historic character, we brought our preservation expertise, community partnerships, and deep understanding of the city's urban fabric to the forefront of one of the most significant redevelopment efforts in a generation. 

From the beginning, HCF advocated for a public process grounded in transparency, equity, and respect for Charleston’s unique sense of place. We informed the public and convened experts, hosted community forums and boat tours, and contributed research to ensure the overall plan honored the city’s historic context while meeting the needs of a growing, diverse community. 

Our focus was clear: to transform Union Pier into a dynamic, accessible waterfront that reflects Charleston’s heritage and resilience. Through tireless engagement, we helped shape a plan that prioritizes appropriate scale, public access, and green space, and which seamlessly integrates into nearby historic neighborhoods.  

The Foundation’s leadership in the Union Pier revival reflects our broader mission: to advocate for a future for Charleston that honors and protects its people, places, culture, and community.
